Sports at Ezra
Extra-curricular athletics are an integral part of an Ezra Academy
Education and are open to students in grades 5-8.
Everyone is encouraged to play team sports.
The goal of our athletic program is to build self-esteem, social
relationships and skill development. We encourage our kids to strive for
their personal best. We support children of all athletic abilities.
We encourage our children to try new things as well as build their
skills in those areas in which they already have experience.
We currently offer 5 different sports and field 6 interscholastic teams
at the Middle School level. Most coaches are current or past Ezra Academy
parents who volunteer their time. In addition, some coaches are Ezra
Academy alumni.
Current extra-curricular active teams include:
-
Basketball (Girls, Boys Varsity and Junior Varsity)
-
Golf (Co-ed)
-
Running Club (Co-ed)
-
Soccer (Boys, Girls, and Co-ed)
-
Tennis (Boys, Girls)
-
Ultimate Frisbee Club
During the 2007 season, the Ezra Academy
Boys' Soccer team was undefeated.
Schools we play include: Cheshire Academy, Christian Heritage School,
Hamden Hall Country Day School, Hebrew High School of New England,
Hillel
Academy, Mooreland Hill School, Chase Collegiate, Solomon
Schechter Academy of New London, The Bess and Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy,

Each spring, Ezra Academy holds the Annual Jonathan Adam Cooper Sports
Awards Banquet, named by Judy and Alan Cooper and family in memory of
sports enthusiast and Ezra alumnus Jonathan Adam Cooper. All students
who
participate in Ezra Academy team sports are presented with trophies at
the
banquet.
The Ben Topf Sportsmanship Award.
The award was created in Ben Topf's memory by his classmates, Class of
2001. It is presented each year to a mensch, someone who plays only for
the love of the game. The award is usually presented at
the Jonathan Cooper Sports Banquet.
